Ran pure Arch quite some time, but now prefer someone else to handle tweaking it for me. I've used Debian, I use Arch-based distros (Manjaro for gaming, Ubuntu for work currently). I think they choose KDE Plasma because the desktop looks quite like windows, it is fairly attractive (my opinion) and KDE might take up less resources than Gnome but KDE is more elegant than let's say XFCE. I think they decided to use Arch because it is fairly lightweight, pretty reliable (not as reliable as Debian) and gets package updates quickly. What's more, there doesn't seem to be anyone else talking about this thus far.Īnyone care to educate me on the choice our man Gabe has just made? Further, would anyone care to make some educated guesses on what it means for the future of gaming on Linux (Arch in particular), considering the healthy pre-orders of the Steam Deck? I don't know enough about Linux to be able to grasp the significance of the shift from Debian to Arch but I know it is significant. I've only dabbled with Linux, know the broader differences between Debian and Arch, and know that I'll end up a Linux boi one of these days. However, SteamOS 3.0, which the newly announced Steam Deck will feature out of the box, is listed as being "Arch-based". Since inception, SteamOS has been a Debian fork. Many will be familiar with SteamOS, at least as a concept. One of the things that piqued my interest with the announcement of the Steam Deck was the OS it was running.
